NEW Practice Green…

Please be aware when you use our practice balls on the new practice area and on #8b to please return them to the Backshop. Balls left behind become a nuisance while trying to mow these areas and each ball cut by the mower cost a dollar to the club! So, lets all help return them in one piece!

Club Championships and handicaps…

The tournament season is just around the corner and I know many of you are excited to play in the club championships. It is of the utmost importance that you have an up to date handicap to participate in these events. Remember that keeping a handicap helps position you into the correct division for play during these events. Keeping a proper handicap benefits you ‘the golfer’, thus make sure you take the steps involved in doing so. If you have any questions surrounding handicaps and entering scores, please feel free to ask the pro shop staff and we will kindly answer your questions and help you along the way.

Pro Shop...

I just wanted to start this piece with a note to all members about the pro shop. The pro shop is owned by the golf club and what this means is that we will match many prices seen at all big box outlets on new equipment. The only time we are not able to match the pricing is when they have blowout sales on clubs from previous years or discontinued models. I just want to make sure that you are all clear on the fact that you own the pro shop as shareholders and members, meaning that every penny of profit is spent on your golf course.

Supporting your pro shop is essentially supporting yourself.

If we don`t have something, please ask and we`ll do our best to track it down and get it into your hands.

Our goal is to make your golfing make your experience more enjoyable.

So, with that said… here some deals!

From the soup bowl…

We had a bit of a slow start in May mainly due to the weather. Even though June  has been a bit unpredictable, business has started to pick up.
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Brunches were very successful . We had 101 people for Mother’s Day and 52 for Father’s Day, both an increase from last year. The Friday night socials have been well attended and I have received many positive comments about how good the specials have been.
Our yearly lobster boil is coming up soon.I encourage you to sign up. It’s a fun night.
Feed back about ‘The Turn’ has been wonderful. Many greenfeers  and members have told me that it is a great improvement to the club. Our cooks have been very busy making sure we have fresh home made goodies every day. Please email me with any suggestions about other goodies or healthier options you would like to see.
We will be making some changes to the dining room menu in July. Again, please feel free to email suggestions. We may even name an item after you!

This week’s professional “Pointer” ...

Attitude

Last week I had the pleasure of teaching young children who were brand new to the game of golf. It is so refreshing to see the enthusiasm these kids have surrounding the simple pleasures of the game of golf. Asking one of the kids if they thought golf was hard, he looked at me with a raised eyebrown and said, “I’m eight and have been playing since I was six, it’s easy.” I was slightly shocked and thoroughly amused at the response and not until afterwards did I have time to reflect on the confidence this young man possessed.

Another major attitude change came from the young superstar and current US Open champion Rory McIlroy who stated that confidence and arrogance were important factors in his recent success.

My point is that attitude can often determine the outtake of a golfer’s performance. The situation could be a putt to win the Club Championship, it could be a chip over a bunker or a long putt for par, but whatever the situation the golfer must approach it with confidence and arrogance in order to succeed.

The tip: think like an 8 year old, they haven`t been told they can’t yet, so guess what, they “just do it”.

Why hello there.  I didn`t see you come in the door.  Lots to talk about with this edition of the desk.   Let`s start with the Coors Light 2-Man scramble.  It was a star studded field for the Coors and it came down to an amazing 4 team playoff!  It was a back and forth battle between the squads, but ultimately it was the team of Bruce Fagan and Mike Earle that outlasted and survived to take home the title for this year. Congrats guys!  Thanks to everyone that played.

In one of the most dominant performances in the history of golf, Rory McIlroy won the US Open. I know that`s not really news, but it was great to see him smoke the field after what happened to him on the back nine of Augusta.   That`s got to put him as the odds on favourite for St George`s for the Open Championship. I`ll be picking him in my pool which we will be doing!  Pools will be available in the pro shop to be picked up soon.  I`m kinda waiting to hear if Tiger is in or out before we release it.

I`d also like to welcome a new team member to Ken-Wo.  Jordan Newcombe is now working in the backshop and has been doing a great job!  Jordan was a junior member here and will be replacing Toven who found employment in Windsor.  Also Jill Redden will be working in the pro shop Tuesday mornings.  Make sure you say hi to Jordan and Jill as you`ll see them quite often this summer, now that summer is finally here.

I usually don`t like to use this form to promote the pro shop, but I will anyway.  Titleist NXT balls are on 3 Dozen for the price of 2 and Pinnacle balls are 18 balls for 24.95. Also the 2nd Titleist fitting day was a rain out so we`ve rescheduled them for Wednesday, July 13th 11:00-3:00.  I put that in bold so it stands out.   You can sign up for a private fitting by contacting the pro shop…and seriously the Titleist 910 Driver is fantastic.  Fenwick likes to call it his `boomstick`.

Our local Ken-Wo Midget juniors (up to 14) are playing at Eagle Crest in the Midget Championship. We have the most amount of juniors playing there this week, which is a great statement to the strength of Ken-Wo Junior Golf.  For a lot of them, this is their first ever tournament, which can be quite an experience. Makes me think back to my first tournament,  The Annapolis Royal Field Day, I won a sleeve of Kro Flite`s and a Transformers lunch kit with a score of 130.  I was 18.

I`d also like the wish the best of luck to the Ken-Wo golfers going up to the Junior championship at Highland Links and the men`s amateur in Truro.  I have a feeling were gonna have another Amateur Champion this year!  Eh, don`t think I`ve forgot about the Ladies in Paragon.  We could have the Ladies Sr champ and Ladies champ as well!  A clean sweep!

Well, I`ve taken enough of your time.

Until next time. Tee it high and hit it hard!
