Hot topics…

In recent weeks we have been troubled with a nasty golfer virus, H1SP. As we look to remedy this bug causing slow play we ask all golfers to do their part to fight against this nasty virus.

#10 Green – Some of you are sentimental regarding the re-building of this old turtleback green, but don’t be because the new re-design is going to fit in nicely. It’s been approved by most of the pro shop staff.

Tiger Woods divorce is official. Weill we see him in the Ryder Cup? Well, if I was Corey Pavin (USA Team Captain) I would strongly consider picking the #1 player in the world. Good Luck Corey!

Future events...

The Applefest Mixed Invitational – October 2 & 3

This is a mixed invitational at the club and we are eager to have some member teams involved in order to host this great fall event.

 A time to remember...

LILLIAN SWANBURG

Lillian Swanburg was a long-time member of Ken-Wo who served as a member of the Board of Directors and who was in charge of the Finance Committee when the new Clubhouse was designed and built (1991).  She also served as President of the Ladies’ Division in 1997-98.

Lillian mentored many of the lady members at Ken-Wo in addition to her success in competition.  She won the Club Championship on 4 occasions—1983, 1992, 1996, 1999.  In 1977 and 2004, Lillian won the Low Net of The Field.  Always an able competitor, in 1997, and 2001 she won the M. W. Graves Spring Handicap Trophy awarded on Match Play.  Lillian was the recipient of the Woodworth Robinson Two-Ball Trophy in 1983 with Jean DeWolfe and in 1987 with Janet Bowness; and in 1983 she won the Ollie Drysdale Tray.  Lillian and Barney Morison donated a trophy for Partners Competition in 1998.  This trophy bears her name along with Pat Wallace on four occasions.

At the Provincial level Lillian enjoyed great success—she was Nova Scotia Senior Champion - 1984 and 1988; and Runner-up - 1983, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990.  As a team member she was able to travel to most provinces in Canada having been named to the Senior Team 1981-1994 inclusive, and 1996 and 1999.

In 1994 as a member of the Nova Scotia Senior Team in Charlottetown, PEI, Lillian shot 78 on the first day of play and was named to the Canadian Team which played against the US players over two days.  This was a proud moment for Lillian in her golfing career as the Canadian team was usually players from BC, Alberta, and Ontario.

Lil was not able to play golf during the 2010 season, but she remained interested in how everyone was doing and she will be missed greatly by her golfing friends—those at Ken-Wo and others throughout the Province.

Derek’s Helpful Advice...

On Friday afternoon a young man at the club, a notable 2009 NS Amateur Champion, Sam Holland stunned the course with his brilliant play. A front nine score of 29 had him excited as he approached the back nine. He birdied #10 and #11 (having also birdied #8 and #9) Death Valley was not able to derail his round either as he holed out his third shot for an eagle moving him to 10 under par. He had a shot at firing an elusive 59 but bogeyed the final hole and settled for a course record tying score of 61. Front nine 29, back nine 32. Not too bad Sam!

Sam was playing with backshop All Star Toven Crockett Allen and we had a chance to ask him about what he had witnessed. He replied by answering, “My arm is still quite sore from fist pumping sooooo hard for the guy, it was unreal, simply wicked mmaaaannnnn!”

What’s the advice? Sam practice habits are second to none. He is often seen at the driving range with a massive bucket of balls or at the short game area working on the finer skills. The advice? If you want to play your best, try your best to find some time to practice.

The View from behind the Desk...with Dan Fraser

On this edition of "The Desk" I'll be going over my top 10 Summer time songs, as sadly the 2010 summer months are just about behind us, and what a summer it's been.  Also, some thoughts on the PGA Championship… a Big shout out to my main man Connie MacNeil who's accomplished an amazing feat and a few youtube videos to make you laugh.

The 2010 PGA Majors produced exciting television with Phil's risk-taking, Graham McDowell's shot making, and an unknown in Louis Oosthuizen becoming a household name. But I don't think anyone can compare those to the Dustin Johnson story at the PGA Championship.  There was tons of talk of the rules official not stepping in or controlling the crowd, but I think Johnson's caddy is at part fault for not getting a hold of the situation. If that was Tiger in that "bunker" his caddy would’ve had people pushed back and maybe even broke some cameras too. Regardless it's an unfortunate situation and thankfully, Johnson missed that par putt on 18 that would’ve won him the championship, or so he thought. That would’ve been awkward, huh.

Breaking News-Cheryl Hawbolt recorded a hole-in one!!!! Congrats Cheryl that's quite a feat. Good thing we changed that hole in one policy.  Also Connie MacNeil had a hole in one earlier this summer that I forgot to report. Not only did Connie get a hole in one, but he shot less than his age! That's awesome. Connie said that it's easy to shoot less than your age if you live to be a 130.

...and with the FedEx Cup playoffs now underway, here's some FedEx ads that you might enjoy. The first one is a Golf School of Business, and the second is one that makes me laugh every time.
