Welcome to the 87th season

at Ken-Wo Country Club.

I trust that everyone had a good winter; however, it was a little long. We are happy to see familiar faces back around the course and enjoying meeting all of the new members.

This year there are a number of significant changes to Ken-Wo. As reported at the shareholders meeting, Ken-Wo has taken over the Pro-Shop, back shop and range. Jamie Brown has been hired as the Director of Golf. Under Jamie's direction, the kitchen, bar and Pro-Shop will be realigned and down scaled to reflect more of the current trends of the needs for Ken-Wo. We are planning a number of new initiatives this year. It is our intent to run Ken-Wo as a business and do what is in the best of Ken-Wo. We hope to continue to have the member’s support of the services of Ken-Wo i.e. pro-shop, bar, kitchen, driving range and stop n’ go. If we have a successful year, this will impact on keeping our dues on an even scale. If we do not support our services, it will have an inflationary effect on next year’s dues.

We thank you for your past support of the club and we thank you in advance of your future support of Ken-Wo.

In closing, I would like to pass on a portion of the news release of Jamie's hiring and say we are looking forward to Jamie being our Director of Golf.

“In a major shift in its management structure, the Board of Directors of New Minas’ Ken-Wo Country Club has named CPGA Professional Jamie Brown as its first Director of Golf. Brown will have responsibility for all aspects of Ken-Wo’s operation in this newly created position.

As both a player and a CPGA Pro, Brown has developed a special relationship with and knowledge of Ken-Wo. He has played at Ken-Wo for some 25 years, having traveled as a Junior from Bridgewater, to enjoy the teachings of former Ken-Wo Pro, Boyd Lockhart. It was at Ken-Wo in 1986 that he won his first Provincial Championship.

Following studies in Golf Course Management in Florida, he moved back to Nova Scotia where he has held increasingly senior positions at several golf courses, including two stints at Ken-Wo. During the 1990’s he was Assistant Pro under the tutelage of well known former Head Pro, Gerry Elliott; upon Elliott’s retirement in 2006, Brown applied for and was appointed Ken-Wo’s new Head Pro.  Brown is married and lives with his wife Tracey and sons Hunter, 7 and Hudson, 4.

Brown’s former experience as Head Pro, Greens Superintendent and General Manager at Osprey Ridge in Bridgewater places him in a good position to take Ken-Wo to new levels. As Director of Golf he will be able to bring together the knowledge and expertise of all aspects of the golfing industry that he has gained over the past 25 years.  He also notes that Ken-Wo’s highly successful CPGA teaching program will continue as in the past. In discussing the Director of Golf position Brown concluded by saying: “Given my past history with Ken-Wo, as both a player and a CPGA Professional, I am excited by the opportunity this new position presents to me.”

All the Best,
